A Chinese translator in Birmingham has been jailed for 12 months after helping 200 learner drivers cheat on their theory driving test.

Peter Hui, an approved DSA (Driving Standards Agency) translator, helped over 200 learner drivers cheat by providing them with correct answers for a fee. An investigation revealed Mr Hui created a code to cover his cheating by saying “shi”, the Mandarin for “yes”, before reading out the answer he thought to be correct.

Hui charged £120 for his deceitful service and is believed to have made nearly £100,000 from his fraudulent practice.

Suspicions arose after the number of theory test candidates choosing to be represented by the mandarin interpreter increased suddenly.

Two candidates, who admitted paying Hui, were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and were ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £100 costs.  They also had their theory test passes revoked.

A similar story arose last week when West Midlands Police arrested an Urdu translator suspected of helping bus and lorry drivers cheat on theory tests.

DSA’s head of fraud and integrity Andy Rice, said: “Anyone who tries to circumvent this process is putting innocent road users at risk”.
